VCU Writes! Is an Open Educational Resource

Our goal is to make VCU Writes! an open-access, shareable resource on the web, and we’d love to see educators and learners utilize, share, and repurpose our work using the Creative Commons licensing that supports content creators and their work. Use the information below to help you read, reuse, and contribute to our project!

For Readers:

Our materials are provided under a Creative Commons non-commercial/share-alike license that allows these materials to be copied and adapted for non-commercial uses. The full terms of this license can be found at the Creative Commons site. Here are the basics:

Under the terms of our Creative Commons license, you may:

  • Share: You may copy and redistribute the material on this website in any medium or format.
  • Adapt: You may remix, transform, and build upon the material.

Limitations:

  • Attribution: You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests that Creative Commons or VCU Writes! endorses you or your use.
  • Non-Commercial: You may not use or adapt any materials on VCU Writes! for commercial purposes or financial gain.
  • Share-Alike: If you reuse this material, you must use the same license as VCU Writes! (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

In other words, you can do a lot with this content. As with any other online content, please feel free to hyperlink to our site. You can also print this site so you have a physical copy and make copies for others, reblog or repost content into your own blog or course site, or even rewrite our content and make a better version if you want! If you republish or reuse our content, please follow the restrictions above. For examples of licensing in action, please see the licensing on our “Writing Argument” pages. If you have improved on our work, please consider submitting it to us for publication using the link below.

One exception to the above is the student work featured on this site, which is not CC-licensed. While hyperlinking to student work on this site is always appreciated, student creators retain full copyright over their work. Please respect the copyright holders and do not reproduce their work in any context. We do this to protect students’ rights to their own work in case they later want to use it in future projects or research that they cannot or do not want to license under CC.

Finally, if you are reusing VCU Writes! content in a class, please remember that CC licensing is not the same as academic citation. If you reproduce our work in a classroom project or context, you may also need to use academic citation in order to meet your class’ or institution’s expectations. (Using our templates, etc. to help you write your citations is not reusing our content!) Because our work is licensed Share Alike, it means that you will also need to license your final work as Creative Commons Share Alike, so please think about whether you are comfortable with that before you incorporate our work into yours.
